I believe in gay rights, let me be clear. But is it necessary to become an activist to give meaning to our words? Just a thought.

As a man who spent five years of his young adulthood in a Catholic seminary and who now embraces a healthy agnosticism, I can perhaps say that my belief systems have run the gamut. As a gay man making his way in the world, reconciling who I was with what religion told me I “should be” became a journey often fraught with guilt, pain, and self-hatred. I suppose none of us can escape the fact that our worldview presupposes the ever present influence of our cultural and religious heritage. But the real moment of spiritual and intellectual liberation for me came when I pulled away from that narrow cultural prism through which we are conditioned to view the world around us and I gathered the courage to explore a far greater horizon.

I applaud your courage in putting forth a whole new perspective on this Jesus character. I’ve heard this argument being raised before, and one of the things that stick in my mind is how our interpretation of scripture seems to always accommodate our personal prejudices and phobias. Is it truly scripture that informs our lives or is it the other way around? Does the believer conform to scripture or does the interpretation of scripture conform to the believer?

I always remember that ancient passage in Mark’s gospel that describes a young naked man spending the night with Jesus. The original text says that the young man came to Jesus wearing nothing but a linen cloth over his naked body, and that Jesus spent the night with the naked boy teaching him about the mystery of god. Conveniently, however, the part about Jesus spending the night with the naked boy has been omitted in most of the modern translations of the Bible.

I’m just saying…
